On one of this week’s segments of #VolunteersWithAVoice, President and CEO of The Miami Foundation, Rebecca Fishman Lipsey, joined us for a reading of I Am Enough by Grace Byers. She taught us that you should always love yourself and you are always enough.
She believes this was the perfect story to read because of the change our world has gone through. It reminds you that even through challenges you may face, you are always enough. Along with being president of The Miami Foundation, she founded Radical Partners, a social impact accelerator that’s helped dozens of nonprofits get off to a flying start. She has always has been one to help others and will find any way to aid the community around her. Before becoming CEO of The Miami Foundation, Rebecca became the youngest person in history to be appointed to the Florida Board of Education. She oversaw the educational policy that impacted 3 million students from kindergarten through college. Rebecca’s love for children and giving back, made her the perfect guest for this week’s #VolunteersWithAVoice.

Another week, another great #VolunteersWithAVoice Story Hour double feature! Our second guest was Neki Mohan, founder of the consulting business and podcast called “The Starting Point”. She read Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon By Patty Lovell.
With our #VolunteersWithAVoice Story Hour segments, our goal is to teach children watching important life messages through entertaining stories. Neki was the perfect guest for doing just that! Neki started her podcast “The Starting Point” to use her platform to spread love and positivity. She believes it is important to find that passion that drives you to wake up every morning. To her, this podcast and her other new projects is her newfound passion. Neki believes that the best thing to help your kids do is to find their own passion. Try everything and you’ll be able to find it!
Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell is a hilarious children’s book, filled with goofy looking characters and a message about believing in yourself. It’s a great book to show the kids watching that they should be the best version of themselves that they can be.

Craft Night with Priscilla Roman!

For Thursday’s segment of LLF’s Craft Night program, LLF Program Director Priscilla Roman talked about the science behind LLF’s motto: Do Good Feel Good! Normally for Craft Night, LLF volunteers visit the Lotus House to do arts & crafts with the kids. Throughout the course of LLF’s DGFG Live Virtual Programming, we now have guests come on for Craft Night to talk about their professional “crafts”! For this segment, Priscilla discussed LLF’s “craft” as a volunteer organization aiming to help others Do Good and Feel Good.
The Science of “Do Good Feel Good”
There are many health benefits to doing good, which can include volunteering, helping your family and friends, or simply doing something kind for a stranger. Health benefits include less stress, which results in a lower chance of high blood pressure. Doing good also increases life expectancy by buffering the correlation between stress and mortality, according to researchers from the University of Buffalo. There are also mental health benefits, which is linked to decreased depression according to BMC Public Health.
After you do good, your body releases endorphins, which creates an effect called Helper’s High. That means that even at a biological level, our bodies have a chemical reaction to doing a good deed. Doing good is also a cycle! The reactions you have will make you want to do good again.
Overall, doing good creates higher levels of self-satisfaction and happiness! It’s ingrained in us as human beings. We are meant to help one another. LLF has so many different ways to get involved, including LLF’s Virtual Programming, Kids 4 Kids initiative, Corporate Partnerships, and more!
