On this week’s segments of #VolunteersWithAVoice, Miami Dade Public Schools Superintendent, Alberto Carvalho joined us for a reading of How Kind! by Mary Murphy.
LLF’s #VolunteersWithAVoice segments were created to share the message of kindness through children’s stories. On the live segment, the Superintendent encouraged viewers to be examples of kindness. He said “The more we demonstrate kindness, the more we are empathetic, the more we are accepting and inclusive, the more children observe what we do and then do what we do. That is why particularly now, when times are difficult, during this crisis, that being kind and empathetic, really listening and paying attention, being polite, those are all teaching behaviors that are best learned by observing rather than simply hearing about them.”
You can keep up with the Superintendent on Instagram @MiamiSup. Tune in next week for a reading by the Mayoress of Miami, Gloria Suarez!
Mindful Hour with Crystal Tejera

This Mindful Hour segment came at the perfect time: Back to School season! This Wednesday we had Crystal Tejera, one of our very own LLF Ambassadors, speak on how to have a mindful mindset during the new and challenging virtual school year.
Crystal focuses a lot of her mentality on the “growth mindset”. The growth mindset is all about having the space to feel okay with making mistakes, so that you become more resilient. This type of mentality is especially important during these times because it gives parents and kids the positive energy to be able to get through any challenges that come their way.
Crystal, a mom and virtual teacher, has a lot of great advice for how to help kids have the right mentality throughout online classes. Her best advice for parents is to set up an organized learning environment for your child and take it in baby steps. Give your children the space to make mistakes, going back to the growth mindset she mentioned earlier, and allow them the opportunity to get accustomed with online learning one step at a time. As Crystal says, “Embrace the Unknown!”
Crystal also touched on the Lotus House, which is an shelter dedicated to improving the lives of homeless women, youth and children. She feels very connected to the cause that the Lotus House stands for and feels for them during these difficult times. If you want to learn more about their mission and how to support them, check out their website LotusHouse.org!
