We started the week with DGFG Live, #VolunteersWithAVoice Story Hour with Writer, Editor, and Content Curator Page Watkins. She grew up in central Florida and attended college in Los Angles, CA. Page did her undergraduate studies at Loyola Marymount University and is currently in the process of completing her MBA at the University of Miami.
She joined us for a reading of Be Kind by Pat Zietlow Miller, a book about how each act, big or small, can make a difference or at least help a friend. What does it mean to be kind? When Tanisha spills grape juice all over her new dress, her classmate contemplates how to make her feel better and what it means to be kind. From asking the new girl to play to standing up for someone being bullied, this moving and the story explores what a child can do to be kind. After the reading, Page mentioned what the story means to her and why is it important to show kindness towards others.

We had the most incredible guest for this week’s Fit Club segment, founder and CEO of Health in the Hood, a non-profit organization that transforms vacant lots of food desert neighborhoods into vegetable gardens. She began Health in the Hood, following in her father’s community gardening footsteps, as an answer to the call for fresh vegetables in food deserts across South Florida. Asha believes that by building community gardens and providing health education in low-income neighborhoods, Health in the Hood is putting children on the path to healthy futures, preventing disease, giving parents helpful information, and creating environments that support healthy choices.
Asha brings her high energy and expertise in community engagement, urban gardening, and wellness to Health in the Hood. For her, growing vegetables in food deserts create connections to food choices and make healthy eating attainable and exciting. She guided us through an easy-to-follow 25-minute workout combining her favorite movement methods for a full-body workout to leave you feeling centered, grounded, and stronger.
