Story Hour #VolunteersWithAVoice with Jim Haj

This Tuesday for our #VolunteersWithAVoice Story Hour we had Jim Haj, CEO  of The Children’s Trust. He read Kindness Rocks! By Eunice and Sonica Ellis.

A career educator and longtime advocate for children with special needs, Mr. Haj came to The Trust after a lauded career serving children and families in the Miami-Dade Public Schools system, as both a teacher and an administrator. A former principal at Paul W. Bell Middle School and Southwest Miami High School (his own alma mater), he took the latter from a “C” to an “A” and significantly improved overall academic achievement, boosting graduation rates and championing inclusion for the school’s special needs population, the largest mainstreamed group of students with disabilities in any Miami-Dade high school.

Mr. Haj later served as administrative director for M-DCPS’ south and central regions, during which time he collectively oversaw 170 schools and nearly 200,000 students. In that capacity, he provided one-on-one support and guidance to principals and assistant principals with regard to curriculum and instruction; state accountability and school improvement; teacher evaluations and professional standards; and crisis response plans and student safety. His final role at M-DCPS, that of an assistant superintendent, saw him acting as its chief negotiator with five labor unions representing more than 31,000 full-time employees.

Mr. Haj is a lifelong Miami resident who received an MBA in business management from the University of Miami and a BS in education from Florida State University. He and his wife, Karen, are parents to three children.

Thank you again to Jim Haj for sharing this wonderful story and supporting #VolunteersWithAVoice!

This Wednesday’s Do Good Feel Good Live started off with Founder of Mission Of The Heart, Sandra Duque for our Craft Night Program.

Sandra M. Duque was born in Bogota Colombia on April 19. Since she was a little girl she had a dream. In 1996 after graduating from Colegio Nueva Granada in Bogotá Colombia, she decided to leave her family and friends to fulfill her dream, play tennis with the purpose of getting a Tennis Scholarship. She got a full scholarship at Ball State University – Muncie, IN in Spring of 1997.

In Spring she transferred to the University of Texas San Antonio where she played NCAA Div I and graduated in May 2001 with a Major in Marketing and Minor in Business Administration.

In October 2001 she got hired with Black and Decker as a Field Sales Representative in Orlando. In 2003 she decided to leave B&D and start her career in the Pharmaceutical Industry in New York City.

Since 2003 she has had multiple roles and responsibilities that lead her to become who she is today; an advocate for patients and their well being, “changing minds to save lives”. She currently works full time for Ironshore Pharmaceuticals. In her “free” time you can find Sandra 100% committed to Mission of the Heart, spending time with family and friends and living a healthy lifestyle;  exercising and doing things that feed her Heart and Soul in a positive way. Sandra’s 17 years of experience in the Pharmaceutical Industry made her realize that her true PASSION in LIFE is helping others. On October 22, 2013 on a plane ride to Philadelphia for a funeral, she started what today is Mission of the Heart.

Thank you, Sandra Duque! You can follow the Mission Of The Heart on Instagram @missionoftheheart
