This Tuesday for our #VolunteersWithAVoice Story Hour we had Zack Bush, National Best Selling Author. He read Made for Me, by Zack Bush.
When Zack Bush was growing up he spent his free time listening to jazz. Instead of imagining a career in law or medicine like so many of his classmates, the Miami native knew he would take a different path. Zack learned to play the piano, and would speak with family and friends about one day owning a venue that would bring the music he loved to others.
Zack is now co-owner of Ball & Chain, a historic live-music venue on Miami’s famed Calle Ocho, in the heart of Little Havana. Zack and his team renovated and restored the nearly forgotten gem, famous for hosting 20th century jazz greats like Chet Baker, Count Basie, and Billie Holliday. Today, musicians from around the world perform live on the Ball & Chain stage.
In addition to Ball & Chain, Zack is the co-owner of Mad Rom Hospitality. Mad Room Hospitality owns and operates Taquerias El Mexicano, a landmark, historic restaurant on Calle Ocho, as well as Los Altos –an intimate speakeasy lounge–also located on Calle Ocho.
Apart from a career in Hospitality, Zack’s other passion is books. A devoted reader and writer, Zack’s lifetime desire to become an author found a refreshed source of inspiration as the father of 5 year old Ace and 4 year old daughter Ava. As a follow up to Made For Me, Zack has co-authored two new series of books, The Little Book Of series and The Little Superhero Series.
Thank you again to Zack Bush for sharing this wonderful story and supporting #VolunteersWithAVoice!

Story Hour #VolunteersWithAVoice with Sharonda Stewart

This Wednesday for our #VolunteersWithAVoice Story Hour we had Momma Blogger,Sharonda Stewart. She read Lovely, by Jess Hong.
Sharonda is a native of Miami, FL. After graduating from Florida A&M University in 2001, she returned to Miami and became an elementary school teacher. While teaching, she met her soon to be husband, Shannon Stewart. Shannon at the time was playing for the Toronto Blue Jays. They got married in January 2005 and she began traveling with him. Soon after, she gave birth to their oldest daughter and officially became a stay at home mom. She had no idea what she was in for. She was able to travel and be an active hands on mom, but it takes a lot of sacrifice. From the outside looking in everyone thinks that it is easy, but it is not. You slowly start to lose yourself. Everything becomes about the family and household and before you know it you barely recognize yourself when you walk pass the mirror. After baby number two and her husband’s retirement from MLB, she struggled with finding herself again. Life as she knew it had totally changed. She knew she had more to give and she knew that she wasn’t the only mom feeling like that. She made it her mission to help uplift other moms.
In 2009, she created Sporty Mommas, a lifestyle brand for women. Sporty Mommas inspires, empowers and encourages moms of all ages to look and feel their best through inspiration, apparel, events and giving back to the community. She has an online boutique full of cute tees for busy moms. She loves doing trunk shows and showcasing her products all over Miami. But, most importantly she loves spreading the message that moms can do their thing too. Over the past few years, the Sporty Mommas Bowling Bash has raised close to $15,000 for women and children in need. The team has donated to different local charities including Jackson Health Breast Cancer Foundation, Honey Shine and Sandy Mueller.
Thank you once again to Sharonda Stewart for sharing a beautiful story and supporting #VolunteersWithAVoice!
